Kenny Chesney Honors The Late Brett James at the 59th CMA Awards

Country music star Kenny Chesney delivered a heartfelt performance at the 59th CMA Awards on November 19, dedicating his set to the late songwriter Brett James, who passed away earlier this year. The tribute came shortly after Chesney’s recent induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, a milestone celebrating his remarkable career spanning nearly three decades.

Introduced by host Lainey Wilson, Chesney took the stage to a standing ovation, greeted with the words, “You better get up on your feet! It’s Kenny Chesney!” Kicking off his performance, he played “American Kids”, a song from his 2014 album The Big Revival. Behind him, 8mm footage of teenagers riding across America projected on a massive screen, capturing the song’s nostalgic, all-American spirit and energizing the audience.

Chesney then shifted to his 2004 hit “When The Sun Goes Down”, the title track from the album that won him the CMA Award for Album of the Year. The performance held special significance as Chesney dedicated the song to Brett James, who had penned the track. On screen, a message honoring James appeared, prompting Chesney to speak directly to the audience: “Thank you so much, Brett James. We love you!” The dedication highlighted not only James’ talent as a songwriter but also the deep respect and admiration Chesney had for his late friend and collaborator.

Chesney’s performance underscored both celebration and reflection—honoring his own achievements while paying tribute to those who shaped his musical journey. At 57, Chesney continues to open up about his life and career, including the recent release of his memoir, Heart Life Music, which chronicles his personal and professional experiences from his early days in Nashville to his current status as one of country music’s most beloved stars.

Since his debut album in 1994, Chesney has built a legacy marked by multiple CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2008, Music Event of the Year in 2012, and the CMA Pinnacle Award in 2016. His induction into the Hall of Fame this year reflects decades of musical influence, commercial success, and deep connections within the country music community.

Through his CMA performance, Chesney not only celebrated his career but also honored the memory and contributions of Brett James, ensuring that his songwriting legacy will continue to inspire fans and artists alike. It was a moment of music, remembrance, and heartfelt tribute that resonated with everyone in attendance
